Tips to amplify your closet

Hello hello! I hope you’re having an amazing beginning of August, I’m flying too much and missing about 15 hours of sleep but that’s okay… Flight attendant life!

Today I want to show you some of my tips to make the most out of my closet and give the maximum use to the pieces I already own. Stay tuned!!

  1. Be aware of what your style is

Honestly, it happens too many times that you want to completely renew your wardrobe and have a new style that has nothing to do with the previous. WRONG! If you bought all those pieces it was for a reason and you should be consistent with what you like.

2. Don’t follow trends

It’s really not worth it and not reasonable to follow all trends, every season. It’s okay if you want to wear your galaxy leggings from 2012 or your skeleton gloves from 2005, it’s you and your life and no one should be telling you otherwise. Fashion should be showcasing a part of you with the pieces you’re choosing and it should also reflect your personality and what you’ve been through.

3. Consider modifying what you already have

Going to a taylor may sound expensive but it really isn’t! For a few euros you can turn your old pieces into a whole new outfit. For example, imagine that you have a patterned dress that you’ve worn a million times and you’re kinda sick of it already, why not turn it into a two-piece set of top and skirt that you can also combine with other items? You will be able to recycle something you once bought because you liked and also you will be eco-friendly.

4. Sell whatever is just hanging there

Sell, donate, whatever, up to you. Really, if you’ve got that certain piece that you never wear and it’s been hanging in the closet for ages, consider selling it online and use the money to invest on something that you’re going to use more often. Buying new clothes is not forbidden because obviously we cannot wear the same clothes over and over, they will eventually look worn out or old.

5. Use the 30 day rule when buying new items

If you’re not familiar with it, lemme enlighten you: the 30 day rule is a mechanism to stop impulse buying where basically, when you see something that you really really wanna buy, you write it down on a notebook, post it, diary, whatever. After 30 days you will go back to this paper where you wrote it and you will see if you still want it. If you do, great, go buy it, go spend some cash. If you don’t, then you know it was just an impulse. It works really good and has saved me many times (not only with clothes). What you can also do is, if you want to buy this item online, just add it to your wishlist or cart.

6. Check for what you actually need

It has happened to me many times that I’m like “ooooh I have nothing to wear, I need this and that” and in the end what I needed was just a black top or a pair of white sandals. Really, a basic can change the game and they are usually very affordable. Shops like New Yorker, Primark, PLT, Asos… they sell super nice basic pieces that might just be exactly what you need. Take a moment to analyze your closet, you might be surprised.

7. Create combinations you never wore before

Mix colours, patterns, put everything on top of your bed and mix it, try it on, see what happens! You may have the best outfits in front of you, who knows! If you can see it, then you can do it. Maybe you’ve been wearing the same shirt with the same trousers for ages while it would look much better with that forgotten pencil skirt.

8. Search for inspiration

Inspiration is everywhere: look out the window and see what people are styling, find an influencer that you like, borrow fashion ideas from your favourite TV show… You’ve got endless opportunities to develop your fashion sense, you’re just not doing it. I have recently got many videos on my Instagram explore page about how to style a clothing piece in different ways, using a rubber band or a nice belt. Everything is invented, I swear to you. Pinterest is also a great way to multiply the possibilities of a piece of your closet.

9. DIY

But not too much, we all know once you cut the fabric you can never go back. DIYs can be cringe, yes, but they can also provide a lot of inspiration and teach you the basics on sewing and cutting your own patterns.

10. Learn to make your own clothes

Go to fashion school! Nah, I’m joking, but it ‘s always a great idea to learn the basics of sweing and patronage so you will not be disappointed when you really want something that doesn’t exist (it happens to me many times). Sometimes you have in mind this specific piece that you can find nowhere, either you like the shape but you don’t like the fabric, or viceversa. Learn to do it yourself, buy the fabric you like and make it fit you like a glove, it’s also the best feeling ever to be self sufficient, trust me on this one.

And that’s it!! I hope I could throw some light on you and that you found some of this hacks/tips/ideas useful, see you next time and have a great summer!! Kisses!!!!
